[this gets a rather loud snort out of sousuke.] We should find a slingshot and sling them at them with a high velocity. [then they could make a little game out of it! see how far it takes to pull said slingshot to get the zombies head to pop off.]
That was seven years ago, Rin. I'd like to think my aim has gotten better.
[ and wouldn't they make a picture, slinging beetle juice at zombies and arguing about who'd downed the most. it'll be like playing video games all over again.
rin laughs. ]
Hey, I dunno.
[ rin bumps at sousuke's shoulder, bracing the bottle of pocari so that none of it sloshes over.
it says something about how much they've been able to eat over the past weeks that rin can't swallow any more after finishing a scant quarter of the bottle. ]
Your brain didn't change much in that time, who knows if your aim did?
[he looks a little affronted by that statement. in fact, he's going to thwack rin on the shoulder because of it.] You callin' me stupid? Because those are fightin' words, Rin.
[ rin just laughs, rolling out of reach. the color has returned to his face, and he's relaxed somewhat. they'll revisit their early conversation again, someday, but rin is willing to shelve it for now. it's too much to handle all at once.
[sousuke can't help the smile that spreads across his face when he hears his friend laugh. it makes him feel a little better about the well being of his friend and the equally shitty situation that they're in.
he quickly reverts back to the frown he had, but you can definitely tell he's still happy since the corner of his lips are twitching in happiness.]
[ that's why he's glad it's sousuke. they've known each other for so long that shifting from one state to another doesn't require any awkward transition states; it's like flipping a switch. rin spreads his arms, challenging. ]
Yeah? Hit me with your worst.
[ his grin is wicked, the serrated edge of his teeth visible beyond his lips. ]
Maybe you'll get lucky and it'll register as more than a strong breeze today, who knows.
[he laughs a little and shakes his head.] When you're done with that Pocari. I wouldn't want to see any of that getting wasted when I knock it out of your hand.
[ rin, very deliberately, reaches over and settles the pocari onto the nearby end table, then shoves the table away with the flat of his foot. the can slides off-center, but doesn't topple. ]
Alright, that's taken care of. What's your next excuse?
[ the problem with going immediately for the noogie -- sousuke always starts out with the noogie. and rin's bulk might not quite compare to sousuke's own, but he's quick and slippery and sly when he needs to be. ]
Nope. Too slow.
[ which is why rin easily ducks under sousuke's arms to grapple with his torso in an attempt to tackle him backwards. ]
[this definitely takes sousuke for surprise as he gets pushed backwards on the bed.] Hey now that's cheating.
[but two can play at that game. so once rin has him pinned against the bed he reaches up and starts running his fingers up and down rin's side in a tickling manner.]
[ but rin doesn't get further than the first syllable in cheating, his voice interrupted with a peal of laughter. well, it's more like a giggle, really, if we're to be specific. which we aren't going to be, as rin is a manly man with very sharp teeth who doesn't giggle, alright. his limbs curl towards his center in an attempt to fend sousuke off; he's still choking on his laughter, trying to bite it back.
after a moment of fighting off sousuke's advances in vain, rin chooses offense instead of retreating, going for sousuke's sensitive spots in turn. his armpits, the crook of his elbow, that spot behind his ear. ]
[he looks up at rin and smirks before he twists the tides over into his favor and flips their positions. much better, wouldn't you say? but before he even has the chance to flip things more into his favor, rin reaches down and starts going for his own weak spots.
he thrashes in turn, but doesn't stop his onslaught. he's gonna make you pay for this bruh! he... also might wet his pants in the process. but hey. no one needs to know that.]
[ running water is a luxury around here, and they only take the chance to bathe in the sea when they're sure there's no danger of being caught unawares. sousuke smells of sweat and of the salt and silt of the ocean. like blood, somewhere underneath it all.
rin grapples with him, finally shoving a hand in his face when he realizes that sousuke is thrashing too much too keep him down. it's a difficult dichotomy to understand: sousuke laughing and warn, sousuke after a hunt, sousuke with a pocari bottle outstretched. rin yanks on his nose, not at all gentle. ]
[he makes an odd yelping and laughing hybrid noise when rin yanks on his nose. he looks up at gazes at rin and smirks. this is the rin he likes seeing the most. there are no worries etched onto his face, no pain, not even an inkling of how they're going to make it to the next day. being in this moment right now kind of makes him feel that the impending zombie apocalypse was just a horrible dream. it makes him feel that things are actually normal for once.] Never.
[and with that, he bucks his hips a little in some kind of attempt to change things into his favor.]
[ sousuke is smirking. he shouldn't be smirking, when rin has him pinned, so rin goes about changing that --
or he would have, if sousuke didn't try to buck him off. reflexively, he catches himself on his palms, one on either side of sousuke's head. that smirking mouth a moment away, a flash of dark lashes and blue eyes, until rin just barely avoids smashing his forehead against sousuke's chin. ]
Hey, Sousuke --
[ instead of trying to fight sousuke off, rin just drops on top of him. and he might have lost considerable muscle mass since all of this began, but he's still one hundred and forty-something pounds of dead weight pinning sousuke down. ]
Oh real mature. [except this opens up more opportunities to tickle the hell out of rin, and so he takes every option he can. on his sides, around his neck, and behind his ears.]
You're one to -- [ except rin doesn't manage to finish the sentence, because sousuke is kind of ruthless when it comes to tickling and it's really not fair. it's not his fault that he wasn't born with elephantine proportions. ] --talk.
[ wherein the word "talk" is delivered upon a high-pitched screechn, and rin nearly brains himself on sousuke's chin as he laughs and struggles and laughs some more. ] Okay. O -- kay. I give. I give, I said!
Victory is mine Matsuoka. [he slides his hands down rin's sides one last time before he relents and gets up.] One day you'll be as big and strong as I am. Just keep drinking that Pocari and sooner or later you'll get there. [he nods.]
[ and maybe there's something wrong with them, something that speaks of fractured minds. that they can return to laughter and light-hearted tussling when they've lost the world that once kept them safe.
or maybe this is just what it means to be human. being able to keep moving forward even after family and friends are stolen away, even when his best friend has cursed him with the knowledge that one death will have to be two. ]
Not all of us are part-tree, alright?
[ but he's reaching for the pocari anyway, unscrewing the cap to fill his mouth with another mouthful. taste and smell and memory, inextricably linked. ]
Besides, we all know who's the better looking of the two of us. Size isn't everything.
[ yeah, that's a smirk. that's definitely a smirk. ]
My momma used to tell me that I was her absolute favorite. [softly nudging rin in the side with his elbow.] And being part-tree isn't so bad you know. The view is a lot better up here.
